A life for photography
From the age of 12, Monik started photography by taking correspondance courses. She photographed her friends during the day and developed her first photos in her laboratory in the evening.
She soon lost her mother and then her father, but kept a passionate will to succeed in her art. With her little savings, she off for Paris where she became an assistant to several professional photographers.
Armed with this experience, she returned to her native island Martinique where she continued her work of assistant. She waited for the birth of her second son, before finally being able to work for herself. She opened her first studio in 1992.
Very quickly, she wished to create a federation of the island's photographers.
In 1993, she became the Founding President of the "Groupement des Photographes Professionnels de la Martinique". She organised an international conference for the photography profession.
Arthur Plater, the President of the National Union said about her : "She is the first female photographer from Martinique, even from the Caribbean, who wishes that photography becomes a more valuable profession."
The first female photographer of the Caribbean has been rewarded for the quality of her work. She obtained the title of "Portraitiste de France Major", in 1996. She has exposed her work in Europe and in the Caribbean.
Today, with as much passion as on her first day, she also knows how to set aside some time for travelling. She loves nature, beautiful gardens and everything that is authentic.
